Studying Electrical Engineering Benefits Humanity Introduction In 1882, the Physics Department of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) offered the first optional course in electrical engineering (Berry, DiPiazza, Sauer, 2003, p.467). Since that time electrical engineers have led the way in fields ranging from communications to transportation, computing and electricity generation. This means that the devices and systems that people take for granted in their daily lives have come into existence due largely to the efforts of electrical engineers. This may be the most important engineering feat of the late 19th and 20th centuries. Brining electricity to customers throughout the wo rld changed people’s lives forever. From simple electrical lighting to appliances such as refrigerators and ovens, life changes in innumerable ways and these changes continued to accelerate as technology expanded and was used in new and exciting ways. It was the engineers who led this charge and made the technologies both safe and efficient. Today we take many of these changes for granted, but at the time the impact was immediate and dramatic. It was only a generation earlier that many people had to rely on carrying water to their homes and heating it over a fire for baths or cooking. They had no way to keep food from spoiling in hot summer months. They had to light their homes and businesses with dangerous open flame sources of light and heat. All of this changed rapidly with the introduction of electricity into homes. Washers, dryers, dishwashers, radios, televisions, vacuum cleaners and all other sorts of devices designed to improve and simplify lives would soon find
